A court in Russia has banned Muslim hijab in schools, days after a country’s school headmaster told five Muslim girls to take off their headscarf.

On Monday, a court in Kara Tyube in Stavropol region issued an order saying that since Russia is a secular state Muslim girls are not allowed to wear headscarf in schools.

This comes as five Muslim girls were banned from attending classes while wearing headscarf in north Caucasus region.

Earlier on October 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke out against the wearing of headscarf at schools and called on school officials in north Caucasus to solve the controversial issue immediately.

“We must always treat the religious feelings of people with great respect. That must be shown in the state’s activities, in the nuances, in everything,” Putin said.

He went on to say that if everyone including children is not treated equally in a secular society like Russia, representatives of other religions in the country will “feel infringed upon”.

Over 20 million Muslims live in different parts of Russia including North Caucasus, Tatarstan, and Bashkortostan.
